Associate Professor, Department of Clinical Pharmacy

Dr. Susan Paulsen is an experienced educator with the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center where she is responsible teaching Introduction to Pharmaceutical Sciences, Professional Skills Development, Integrated Organ Systems and Comprehensive Patent Care. Additionally, she takes pride in her work with the Preceptor Program. When not acting in an educational role, Dr. Paulsen works with the Integrative Medicine Department, putting an emphasis on the wellness and healing of the entire person, drawing on both conventional and complementary medicine.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe the legal and industry standards for the manufacturing of nutritional supplements.
  2. Discuss criteria for selecting safe brands.
  3. Review the safety and efficacy, adverse reactions and contraindications of popular supplements including fish oil, cassia cinnamon, grapeseed extract, resveratrol, glucosamine, ginseng, CoQ10, green tea, ginkgo biloba, feverfew , multivitamins and chocolate.
  4. Review the primary literature.
