At the conclusion of this continuing education lesson, the pharmacist will be able to:
- Explain the metabolic pathways for oral contraceptive metabolism.
- Identify major inhibitors and inducers of Cytochrome P-450 isoforms important in the metabolism of oral contraceptives.
- Summarize the published data that examines interactions between oral contraceptives and antibiotics.
- Counsel patients and physicians regarding combined use of oral contraceptives and potentially interacting drugs.
