An Evidence-Based Approach to Treating Seizures & Behavioral Disturbances in Individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities
After completing this program, participants will be able to:
  • Describe the prevalence of seizure disorders in individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) and consider issues in seizure control that are special to the I/DD population.
  • Discuss other psychiatric and neurological conditions which may cause behavioral disturbances in individuals with I/DD, including bipolar disorder, aggression, pervasive developmental disorders and self-injurious behavior.
  • Compare and contrast antiepileptic drugs based on safety and efficacy profiles, as well as drug-drug interactions in individuals with I/DD who often have complicated drug regimens.
  • Evaluate pharmacologic treatment of individuals with I/DD, considering simplification of administration, reduction of total medication burden, quality of life, ease of dosing and cost considerations.
